Travel SMART 7 Days a Week

SMART is back on track with an expanded schedule that includes weekends and fare discounts of up to 50%. The trains serve a 43-mile corridor from northern Santa Rosa (near the Sonoma County Airport) to Larkspur, connecting to San Francisco via the Larkspur Ferry.

And when you travel the North Bay corridor on SMART, you travel in style. Each sleek two-car SMART train can carry more than 300 people, more than 40 bicycles and has a concession stand and restroom on board.

To take advantage of the promotional fares, you’ll need to install and use the SMART e-Tickets app on your phone. The SMART e-Tickets app is the simplest and most cost effective way to pay for the train. You can download it fore free in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. You can purchase the fares for the entire family on one phone so there’s no need to “tag on and off” when boarding and departing from the train. Just show the conductor your activated tickets on your phone.

Discount Clipper cards are available for Youth (5-18), Seniors (65 and over) and passengers with disabilities (Regional Transit Pass – RTC) can only be obtained online at ClipperCard.com/clipperweb/discounts, at SMART’s office or at participating transit agencies.

Looking for a fun weekend outing with the kids and grandparents? The SMART Weekend Day Pass is a fantastic deal.  For $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, youth, passengers with disabilities, and low-income riders, the Weekend Pass offers unlimited rides for the entire day. The Pass will be available on the SMART e-Ticket App only.

If you want to purchase a Clipper® card which is accepted by other Bay Area transit providers, the card can be purchased at the vending machine on the platform.  Remember that no cash payment is accepted on the train; the only ways to pay for the train are either with the SMART e-Tickets app on your phone or with a Clipper® card.

Because historic Petaluma’s dining, shopping and recreation options are just a 10 minute walk from the train platform, visitors love including Petaluma in their SMART train trip itinerary. On your way into town, pick up a Petaluma Visitors Magazine 24/7 from the literature holder outside the front door of the yellow train depot that now serves as the Visitors Center.

The SMART train carries Petaluma’s railway legacy forward. The City’s railway history started in 1864 with the establishment of a steam locomotive and continued until the last passenger train passed by the Mission-Revival style depot in 1958.
