Anticipation for harvest season starts in July because everyone driving Highway 101 can see Petaluma Pumpkin Patch just west of the freeway. There are rows upon rows of corn seedlings – planted from 150,000 corn seeds –that by October will be 10 feet tall and sculpted into the 4-acre Amazing Corn Maze.
The Pumpkin Patch is the passion of 4th generation Sonoma County farmer Jim Groverman who for 20 years, has been creating an “agro-tainment” experience. The challenging corn maze is an attraction unto itself but many visitors also come for the authentic farm experience. Farmer Jim plants 35 varieties of pumpkins in the 5-acre patch. Giant, dwarf, smooth, warty…pumpkins for cooking, carving or creating a unique harvest display…there are literally tons of options. In addition to pumpkins, there is a rainbow of squash and gourds grown on the farm that make beautiful decorations or delicious eating.
The Amazing Corn Maze is legendary for testing visitors’ navigation abilities. A new design is created every year so that even experienced maze runners face a new challenge to find the one way out. Plan on about 45 minutes to complete the maze. To add to the fun, second-story viewing platforms have been added so that you can watch the progress of your family and friends. For those seeking a spooky experience, bring a flashlight and your courage for the Night Maze!
There is no admission charge to the pumpkin patch, free parking and many free activities – in addition to picking the perfect pumpkin – for families. Kids love scrambling up the straw mountain created from 500 hay bales, digging in the Corn Kernel Sand Box, and visiting the farm animals.
